“Man, your sins are forgiven you.” Luke 5:20
And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Luke 7:48
On these two occasions, our Lord Jesus pronounced certain persons’ sins forgiven. A paralyzed man and an immoral woman received this great blessing. Neither the number nor the nature of their sins was a decisive factor. Nor did He demand an extended period of penitence as a prior condition of His forgiveness. But this He did look for—”faith” or “trust” in Himself. Without that, there could be no forgiveness. The Gospel’s promise is, “everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name” (Acts 10:43). —George Hall
