Genesis 39:1-23; Psalm 17:1-15; Matthew 22:15-46

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. James 1:26, ESV

This verse indicates we can deceive our own hearts by not watching our words. Bridling the tongue is no easy task. It is impossible without the Holy Spirit and our constant obedience. James gives us practical wisdom as to how to accomplish this: “be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19, ESV). —Glenda Paquette

Lord, I want to speak life not death; empower me as I wait;
Listening to my transformed heart before I venture to speak;
Holy Spirit, tame my tongue as I employ the self-control,
You are developing in me—To speak life not death—
Into others’ lives and reputations—in all my words God be glorified. —G. P.
