Among unbelievers, there is often a genuine fear, sometimes even a degree of terror, about the future. They may have noticed that many churches do not provide answers to their questions, so it is hardly surprising that some turn to fortune tellers, astrologers and other occult sources, which are only too willing to oblige with their lies. Some try to forget it all by taking to drink or drugs. Others plunge themselves into well-meaning but futile ‘too little – too late’ activities in order to try to ‘save the planet’; one has to admire them for their dedication.
Believers may be puzzled. Over the past few decades there has been much teaching, reinforced by triumphalist new songs, telling them of a golden age just around the corner, when the name of Jesus will be universally acclaimed. And yet the reality they see is one of looming ecological disasters, rampant immorality and violence, international terrorism and genocide, and the explosion of militant Islam.
Is the Bible wrong? Certainly not! Everything is on course in God’s graciously revealed plans. But it is vital that unbelievers know what steps God requires them to take for their eternal security, and equally important that believers be better informed if they are to perform their much talked about ‘salt and light’ role.
