The church in Thessalonica was a congregation of new believers that was impacting their world for Jesus. Their brotherly love, steadfast hope, and desire to serve the Lord were a testimony to the early churches Paul founded. But their awe-inspiring love for Christ came at a terrible price. They endured tremendous trials and tribulations, to the point that many gave their lives for the gospel.
Unable to go himself, but greatly concerned for the believers in Thessalonica, Paul sent Timothy to encourage them in their faith. Upon Timothy’s return, Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians to further equip these young believers to live as beacons of light in an immoral city. He instructed them to go beyond their efforts in living for Christ and sought to clarify their understanding of the Rapture, particularly the concern among the believers that those who had given their lives in testimony to Christ would have to wait around in some intermediate state and would miss the Rapture.
After his first letter, rumors began to circulate throughout the church in Thessalonica that the Rapture had already taken place. These believers, spurred on by the tremendous trials they were going through, thought they were living in the Day of the Lord, the time of the Great Tribulation. Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians to dispel these rumors and to further encourage them to stand firm in Christ.
This commentary speaks to the 21st century Christian. With the persecution of believers on the rise, sexual immorality running rampant, and the abundance of End Time prophecies, Dr. Couch’s commentary will help the reader understand how to stand for Christ in a fallen world and find hope in Christ’s return.
