Description

First Corinthians: The Imperfect Church
By: Robert E. Harlow

The apostle Paul could say many good things about the church in Corinth, but he had to correct what was wrong. There has probably never been a perfect church in the past nor yet today.

What would it be like if there was one? By “perfect” we must mean according to God’s standards. Without claiming perfection, even approximation, every Christian church should strive to follow the pattern God desires. Spirit-guided apostles wrote to churches in the first century according to God’s will and told them what they should do. We ought to know what they wrote, seek to mould out churches in a similar way, and pray for the Lord’s help in doing so.

So the imperfect church may help us to draw closer to God’s standard of what a church really should be.

Robert E. Harlow,a long-time commended worker, went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2003, five days short of his 95th birthday. He was co-founder of Emmaus Bible College, now located in Dubuque, Iowa, and founder, along with his wife, Gertrud, of Everyday Publications, Inc., in Port Colborne, ON. Dr. Harlow wrote more than fifty books. His book, Can We Know God? (1958), was the first of a series of books he wrote in simple, “Everyday” English. It has sold some 500,000 copies in more than a dozen languages. A native of Toronto, he was also a missionary in the Belgian Congo.
