“Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.” 1 Corinthians 8:1-3
The paramount reason to study Scripture is to learn what God reveals about Himself – to know the One who is all-knowing. Knowledge that puffs up is not the goal, but rather awareness of God’s greatness which prompts us to fall on our faces in wonder and awe before Him.
Whenever a believer’s understanding of God slips, or his or her desire to know God more intimately wanes, something has gone very wrong. Understanding who God is, and what He has done and will do, promotes our spiritual vitality.
May our comprehension of God prompt our own condescension, our exaltation of Him, and an insatiable desire to know Him more.
