“Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” In these famous words, the Apostle Peter characterizes the ministry of the Old Testament prophets (2 Peter 1:21). He is, of course, referring to the Major Prophets–Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel–as well as the twelve Minor Prophets who are the subject of the following chapter.
In order to appreciate jus how important a place prophecy holds in Scripture, we need to remember that sixteen of the thirty-nine books in our English Old Testament canon are prophetical. The Hebrew Bible has a different arrangement and includes even more. It designates the six historical books: Joshua Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings, as “Prophets” (Nebiim) as well.
The reason for this is the Old Testament history is more like a philosophy of history than simply a recording of events, names and dates. The Jewish chroniclers read God’s actions in the life of His chosen people as another part of his self-revelation. He spoke “in history” as he spoke “through prophets.”
